The Zande people are located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the banks of the Uele River. Zande sculptures represent ancestors or animal figures with simplified features and enlarged heads. These statues called Yanda are associated with the highest rank of the secret Mani society which protects society members from the dangers of illness, hunting and evil spirits. This stool was used during divination and ceremonial rites. it has a round seat supported by a human figurehead, it has a dark brown patina carved in heavy smooth wood.
