This magnificent wooden sculpture originates from the Zande people. The Zande are found in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Northern Democratic Republic of Congo. Zande sculptures are often representations of ancestors. Some of the Zande sculptures are associated with the highest rank of the secret Mani society which protects society members from the dangers of illness, hunting, and evil spirits.
The present sculpture is a typical, old, ancestor figure of the Zande. It has short legs and flat feet stand firmly with legs spread on the floor. Shorthands with no arms and nice facial features. The patina on this piece is wonderful and it shows perfect signs of age and usage.
