This magnificent wooden sculpture originates from the Zande people. The Zande are found in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Northern Democratic Republic of Congo. Zande sculptures are often representations of ancestors. Some of the Zande sculptures are associated with the highest rank of the secret Mani society which protects society members from the dangers of illness, hunting, and evil spirits.
The present sculpture is a typical, old, male ancestor figure of the Zande. It has hands carved on the body sides, stable feet standing firmly on the floor and two metallic nails inserted as eyes. The patina on this piece is wonderful and it is quite worn out because of frequent usage and old age.
