Zande Sculpture (CSTA-040)

The Zande are found in the African countries of South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Northern Democratic Republic of Congo.  Zande sculptures are often representations of ancestors.   Some of the Zande sculptures are associated with the highest rank of the secret Mani society which protects society members from the dangers of illness, hunting, and evil spirits. This is a flat figure with strings of fiber attached around it. The following statue has interesting facial features. It has a dark patina and looks considerably old with traces of wear.
