This is a mask from the Zande in the northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Zande art is linked primarily to rituals of the Mani Society, which helps to balance out the power of the ruling family.
This old mask carved in wood shows signs of wear both at the back and face of the mask, it has a concave face, well-sculpted small round eye openings, a flat nose with very notable scarification running from the forehead to the nose, it also has scarifications on the top, it has an oval-shaped mouth, three holes around the mouth and a worn-out brown patina due to extensive usage.
