Zande Knife (LMCL-032)

The Zande are an ethnic group of North Central Africa. They live primarily in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the south-central and southwestern part of South Sudan, and in the southeastern Central African Republic. Although called a throwing knife, this type of object was used as both a weapon and a tool. It is sometimes referred to as a ‘sickle knife’, due to the curved shape of the blade; similar examples are known amongst the Mangbetu as well the blade is made of iron, the handle and pommel are made of wood, and there is copper wire around the upper part of the handle. It may have functioned both as a tool and a weapon. Similar to a machete,
