The Zande live in the northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the banks of the Uele River. Zande sculptures represent ancestors. Zande statues are associated with the highest rank of the secret Mani society which protects society members from the dangers of illness, hunting, and evil spirits. The following figures were used as storage vessels, they look visibly old and show signs of age and usage.
