The Sukuma are located within the Northern part of Tanzania. Sukuma carvers are associated with large, rough-looking, standing figures and masks which were used by musicians and dancers during ceremonies in the dry season, following the harvest. Figures such as this were from Tanzania and are used during initiations and by traditional practitioners of healing rituals. They also are said to commemorate an ancestor.
