Sukuma Staff Tanzania (LMCL-048)

The Sukuma are a Bantu ethnic group located in northern Tanzania, Sukuma means north and refers to people of the north. The Sukuma artists made these ceremonial staffs that would have an ancestral figure that represented the portrait of the ancestor, or the faces might resemble the carrier. Whenever a staff was decorated with a female figure, it was generally used to show specific traits within the carrier. This is an amazing staff with three female figures placed at different positions on the long straight staff. The two figures are seated while the other below is standing. It has a brown patina and visible signs of old age.
