The Sukuma are located within the Northern part of Tanzania. Sukuma figures were often employed by musicians and dancers during ceremonies in the dry season, following the harvest. Figures such as this were from Tanzania and are used during initiations and by traditional practitioners of healing rituals. They also are said to commemorate an ancestor. The following sculpture has a dark patina and looks visibly old.
