The Suku people have lived in the southwestern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Numerous well carved Suku cups are found of a shape based on a particular gourd sliced in half. This results in two oval mouths with a small bridge in between, incised decorations appear on both sides. .The cups were passed down in a matrilinear succession and generations of use accounts for the shiny old patinas that are the characteristic.
