The Songye people are a Bantu ethnic group from the central Democratic Republic Of Congo, the Songye made power figures. Walking sticks/canes were carved for men’s attire, they were carefully carved ornamental objects made in different forms, they were used to provide support and as act as a symbol of authority among the Songye. Often the staffs represented the hierarchy among the chiefs of the tribe, who might carry a staff to show their rank as distinguished elders. The ornamental faces on the staffs can represent spirits, chiefs, or the chief’s ancestors. They are as much a religious symbol as an authoritative one. This is an elegant staff decorated with a human figurine at the top standing on a wide disc-shaped sculpted piece of wood and a long stick, it has a dark brown patina and shows signs of age.
