Songye Headrest (CSTA-094)

The Songye people are a Bantu ethnic group from the central Democratic Republic Of Congo. The Songye made literally unique headrests with elaborated carved figures on the support, they made headrests in different forms like the human caryatid forms and animal caryatid forms. Most Songye headrests display a very particular version of the Songye figural style. Headrests were used to raise heads of sleeping persons above the ground or sleeping mat. The following is a beautifully carved headrest crafted from hardwood with a figure carved at the support. It has a shiny brown patina and shows visible signs of old age.
