The Songye is found in the Democratic Republic Of Congo on the left of the River Lualaba. The Songye people are popular for crafting numerous tribal artwork like power objects, witchcraft, and sorcery. Their rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Large ones were owned by and served the community, small ones were for individual families. The following is a head fragment of what could have remained of a Songye sculpture and is crafted from hardwood with a dark patina and a horn.
