The Songye are a Bantu ethnic group from the central Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Songye people, like Luba people, are well-known woodcarvers who are renowned for making ceremonial masks, power figures, and other ceremonial items. Calabashes were primarily used for divination purposes. Calabashes such as this were often cut from a gourd, the following vessel bears a black patina and is covered in bird feathers, it is a bush collected item and we believe that it is old because of its patination and tear.
