This a wonderful three-legged wooden headrest originating from the Rendille tribe a pastoralist group in northcentral Kenya. Headrests were used by the Rendille while resting or sleeping. It is popularly believed that the headrest serves a protective function by elevating the head off the ground during sleep, thereby preventing any possible attack by snakes or scorpions.
The flat platform of this headrest serves as a stool or headrest and legs that extend in different directions to give resistance and stability. It shows traces of frequent usage, has a wonderful patina and it shows clear signs of age.
