Rendille Headrest (LHRT-067)

This a wonderful three-legged wooden headrest originating from the Rendille tribe a pastoralist group in northcentral Kenya. Headrests were used by the Rendille while resting or sleeping. It is popularly believed that the headrest serves a protective function by elevating the head off the ground during sleep, thereby preventing any possible attack by snakes or scorpions. Such headrests were carried hanging from the belts of nomadic herding men so they may be used whenever required.

This fine headrest is a result of hard work and skill, mostly extracted from the roots of a tree. The flat platform of this headrest serves as a stool or headrest. The legs extend in different directions to give resistance and stability. It has woven twisted leather on one side. The Small splits, scrapes, cracks and a drilled hole are a normal part of the patina attesting to their age. It shows traces of frequent usage, has a wonderful brown patina and it shows clear signs of age.
