The Ngbaka are situated mostly south of the Ubangi River, in the northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Ngbaka figures are believed to represent their two primordial ancestors and are placed on altars in houses where they fulfil a protective role. This is a rather a rare sculpture and it bears a khaki patina and shows signs of considerable age.
