This type of slit drum is found in a large area of the Democratic Republic of Congo: Central Basin, Maniema, Kasai, Katanga, Kivu and the Kwango, and is called by several names (Lukumbi, Ikumvi). This slit drum is an idiophone drum craved from hollowed wood with a narrow groove that serves as a sound opening. The slit drum was struck with sticks on both sides of the narrow groove and it produced two different pitches. It was used as a means of communication by signalling messages among the Bantu people, it was also used as an entertainment instrument which produced deep tones and different pitches. The following drum has a brown shiny patina and shows visible signs of age and usage.
