The Mbala people are located in the Kwando-Kwilu region in the southwest of the Democratic Republic Of Congo. The Mbala is famous for their maternity figures and statues locally known as Pindi. Pindi figures were owned by Mbala land chiefs who invoked the figures in the event of war, great disputes, bad harvests, epidemics, lack of game or natural disasters. Pindi figures were also employed during accession rites for chiefs. The following is a Mbala figure and it has a brown patina, it looks visibly old and shows great usage.
