The Mangbetu are people living in the north-eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most Mangbetu art was reserved for ruling class say kings and chiefs who wanted to show off their power and wealth, they were secular in nature. Wooden figures are believed to be ancestral portraits. This piece is supported by a round base with a shinny brown patina, it is completely carved out of wood with visible signs of old age.
