The Makua people, also known as Makhuwa, are located in northern Mozambique and southern border provinces of Tanzania. This is a small mask with a flat nose which is a typical Makua style art form, smallmouth and eye openings which enables you to see out when dancing, long ears which make it unique. Such masks were used to hide a dancer’s head while dancing at ceremonies. It is carved out of hardwood with a shinny dark patina and shows signs of old age due to usage.
