The Makonde are an ethnic group found in both Tanzania and Mozambique are separated by the Rovuma River. While everyday stools are regarded as quite ordinary objects in Tanzania, the chiefs of certain peoples have specially carved seats of the most various forms, including those with high backs. These stools were part of family treasures, which would be passed down from generation to and were used for ceremonies and rituals. They were also are token of leadership and, as it was not permitted to lay sacred objects on the ground, they were always placed on stool. The following Makonde stool is carved in hardwood and has a dark shiny patina and, it looks visibly old.
