The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are separated by the Rovuma River and are culturally distinct. The Makonde are known as master carvers throughout East Africa, Makonde sculptures were used as objects of worship. The following Makonde statue has a dark brownish shiny patina and is made out of hardwood, it looks visibly old.
