Luguru Chair Tanzania (LSTA-095)

The Luguru are a Bantu cluster found in both east and central Tanzania in East Tanzania. Very little is known about the Luguru art. These chairs were reserved for chiefs only and were used during judicial and initiation ceremonies.

This is a nice heavy hard wooden carved piece with a brown patina, it is a high backrest which displays the abstract shape a woman with breasts on the inside of the rest, and neck and head with high crested coiffure in the upper section. The round seat rests on three legs that are connected by rhombs on the left and right sides and decorated with chip-carving motifs on the external side. Carefully crafted chip-carving decorations also embellish the back of the chief’s chair.
