The Luguru are a Bantu cluster found in both east and central Tanzania in East Tanzania. Very little is known about the Luguru art. These chairs were reserved for chiefs only and were used during judicial and initiation ceremonies.
This is a nicely heavy-hard carved wooden piece with a dark patina and visible signs of old age. It is a high backrest that displays the abstract shape of a woman with breasts on the inside of the rest, and neck and head with high crested coiffure in the upper section. The round seat rests on three legs that are connected.
