The Luba are an ethnic group found in the South-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). The Luba tribe are well known to carve beautiful chairs, divination bowls, boards, and sculptures, better yet they were mostly known for a feminine representation to show the importance of women in society. Stools are among the most important symbols of the Luba tribe. This figure shows that a ruler was literally supported by a female caryatid figure, which also symbolizes the continuity of power in a matrilineal society. This stool is carved in heavy wood with a smooth texture and a dark patina with visible signs of old age.
