The Luba are an ethnic group found in the South-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Luba held women in high regard, women were looked at as the primary keepers of societal secrets. This sculpture was used as a symbol showing the value of women in society, it represented secrecy and power associated with women. This is an interesting Luba sculpture beautifully carved from wood with a dark patina, with visible signs of wear to mean extensive usage.
