The Luba people are an ethnic group found in the south-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Majority of them live in this country, residing mainly in its Katanga, Kasai, and Maniema provinces in most cases, pottery was made by women. Clay was worked on entirely by hand and shaped and fashioned into the desired shape. In other cases, the women would pour the clay into a mould made of pottery, wood or a calabash. Clay pots were and still are being used to cook food, store water and for various other food functions. This is a Luba excavation pot and it shows good signs of age and usage, its surface bears marks and it is undoubtedly a field-collected item.
