This Luba mask originates from eastern Songye in Congo. Their masks share a similar characteristic as that of the Songye tribe. The term Kifwebe means a mask in this region. Artists hold a special place in the Luba tribe. Such masks were used for dances, lunar ceremonies or plays. Luba masks are wooden and hand-carved and hand-painted by individual artists. So no two masks are exactly the same.
