This Luba mask originates from the south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). The Luba people neighbor the Songye tribe and their masks share similar characteristics to those of the Songye tribe. The Luba tribe are best known for their chairs, divination bowls, beautifully carved sculptures, memory boards, and masks. They used the masks for dances, lunar ceremonies or plays, artists held a special place in the Luba tribe. The Luba made many masks that looked similar but differ slightly in size, look, color. Their masks were hand-carved and hand-painted by individual artists. This is a zoomorphic chimpanzee-like Luba mask is crafted from wood, it has interesting facial features, a worn-out brown patina due to extensive usage.
