This Luba mask originates from the south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). The Luba people neighbor the Songye tribe, Zela, Kunda and their masks share similar characteristics to those of the Songye tribe. Their masks were hand-carved and hand-painted by individual artists. The Luba are known to be inventive when it comes to persona depicting their masks. Among the Luba, some masks depict non-traditional forms, for example, this particular mask commonly known as a “La Belle Madeleine” depicts exotic characteristics of a catholic nun with a lovely face, it has a dark patina and the face surface is covered in paint like coat, it shows visible signs of age and usage.
