This Luba mask originates from the south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). The Luba people neighbour the Songye tribe, Zela, Kunda and their masks share similar characteristics to those of the Songye tribe. Their masks were hand-carved and hand-painted by individual artists. The Luba are known to be inventive when it comes to persona depicting on their masks. Among the Luba, some masks depict non-traditional forms, for example, this particular mask commonly known as a “La Belle Madeleine” depicts exotic characteristics of a catholic nun with a lovely face, it has a dark patina and the face surface is covered in paint like a coat, it shows visible signs of age and usage.
