Luba Ivory Statue (LMCL-006)

The Luba people are an ethnolinguistic group found in the south-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The majority of them reside mainly in  Katanga, Kasai, and Maniema provinces. Luba ivory figures are portraits and are named and honored in memory of certain revered ancestors. Although each figure is slightly different in its detail, all share a  human form,  the gesture of the hands-on the breasts signifies devotion, respect, and, of royal secrets.  Scarifications found on Luba figures embody fundamental principles of life and continuity.  This is a visibly old Luba figure and shows signs of age and usage.
