The Luba people are an ethnolinguistic group found in the south-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Majority of them reside mainly in Katanga, Kasai, and Maniema provinces. Luba ivory figures are portraits and are named and honoured in memory of certain revered ancestors. Although each figure is slightly different in its detail, all share a human form, the gesture of the hands-on the breasts signifies peace, respect, and, wealth. Scarifications found on Luba figures embody fundamental principles of life and continuity. The coiffures are intricately detailed to imitate actual Luba women’s coiffures of the nineteenth century. This is a visibly old Luba figure and shows signs of age, wear, and usage, like most tribal art, it shows signs of natural abrasion.
