The Luba people live in the southeast of the West African Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Luba tribal art is commonly known for beautifully carved items with personal representations of importance to society. This sculpture was used to represent artists who were well-respected men in the Luba society, It was used to protect the vulnerable ceremonial hairstyle and it represented the owner’s well-being and social prestige. Such headrests were often buried with their deceased owners. This particular headrest illustrates a man and woman in a loving embrace. It has a shiny dark patina with a smooth texture and carved out of heavy wood.
