The Luba people live in the southeast of the West African Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Luba tribal art is commonly known for beautifully carved items with personal representations of importance to society. The wealthy and prestigious rulers commissioned fine works of art for personal, prestige and political purposes. This sculpture was used by high ranking people to lift their heads during sleep and also protecting the vulnerable ceremonial hairstyles. The following headrest displays a human form and has a shiny dark patina and shows visible signs of age and usage.
