This African carved wood headrest was collected from the Luba tribe in the South-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). The art of the Luba is known for the representation of women and correlates to the important role of women in Luba society. Among the Luba, Headrests were used to support the head of the owner, essentially to preserve the elaborate hairstyles. The more intricate headrests belonged to high ranking members of the tribes. They had figural carvings, including people and animals.
This particular piece is nicely carved from one piece of wood. It is stylized with an abstract form of an animal, which is typical of the arts of the Luba. It shows signs of frequent usage, old wonderful brown patina. Some wear attesting to old age and clear signs of natural abrasion.
