Luba Calabash (CMI-018)

The Luba people  are an ethnic group indigenous to the south-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Majority of them live in this country, residing mainly in its Katanga, Kasai, and Maniema province.Ritual calabashes such as the present one  and are used by the ritual operatives of the Luba  as necessary objects during their divinations, healings and initiation rites. Especially during initiations of member in important secret societies. . Magic derives from a hole for fetish materials on top of the head . This is an old calabash with a black patina and it shows visible signs of age.
