Lotuko Tribe Headrest (LHRT-075)

This is a fine four-legged headrest from the Lotuko an agro-pastoralist tribe in southern Sudan, they neighbour the Dinka. Headrests from this region were carved from blocks of wood into a designed form. The variations on the headrests are plentiful as their uses, they differ in accordance with the age, gender, wealth and status of the user.  In this region, such headrests were used to bend the branches to hold the thorny parts down. Sometimes, these headrests were used to hit reptiles and other animals in the bush.

The flat platform of this headrest serves as a stool or headrest and the other pieces on the headrest were of unexpected use. This old piece has a narrow horizontal platform and legs that extend in different directions to give resistance and stability. It shows traces of frequent usage, has a wonderful patina and it shows clear signs of age.
