The Lombi made vintage masks with interesting features. The Lombi are an ethnic group, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They are extremely rare and quite an isolated group because they speak a Sudanic language but are surrounded by Bantu linguistic families. This mask is flat and covered with faded white, blackish, red finger-applied dot pigment.
It has an unusual lozenge-shaped nose. This mask has two slanted large holes representing eyes. Based on what happens among the Lombi’s neighbors, it is believed to have been used during ceremonies linked to the initiations of young men. It resembles a number of masks from the Ituri mask.
