This astonishing mask originates from the Lombi, an ethnic group, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They are extremely rare and quite an isolated group because they speak a Sudanic language but are surrounded by Bantu linguistic families. This is a vintage wooden old mask, it has two slanted large holes representing eyes, a mouth with two rows of teeth and a protruding forehead. Based on what happens among the Lombi’s neighbors, it is believed to have been used during ceremonies linked to the initiations of young men. It resembles a number of masks from the Ituri forest and has a worn-out dark brown patina.
