This is a Lega trunk head and such statues were revered to be one of the most important object types in Lega art. Sculptures of this type were both owned by the highest-ranking bwami or communally entrusted to an individual of lesser rank. Very little information regarding the use of trunk heads is known but was most likely the central figure around which other sculptures were displayed in bwami rituals. The following sculpture is undoubtedly a field-collected item and bares a consistent patina and shows signs of age.
