The Lega is found in the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. This is an old Lega mask that was carved from turtle shell it shows wear and tear and has a nice patina. The Lega admire turtles which they commonly refer to as Nkulu for their slow and cautious movements. They also believe that they are smart. During ceremonies, turtles are represented with sculptures or with a shell. They symbolize the wisdom of the older senior members of the Bwami.
