Lega Stool (STL-018)

This is an old stool carved by a Lega craftsman. The Lega is native in the virgin forest of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,  next to Luba people. Like nearly all art among the Lega, stools have a metaphoric use in the Bwami association. The Bwami is the primary secret society by which socio-political life is structured. Members at the level called Yananio would keep their stools until death. Stools designate status and represent the complete moral code of society.

Such stools are and were personal to the owner. Usually very short, uniquely designed with two seats. They were not transferred or traded. The size of the stool was often in relation to the importance of the owner. This stool is in good condition, though worn with age. Has an old dark brown patina with evidence overall of old worm wear to the surfaces.
