The Lega inhabit the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River. These sculptures were individually owned by the highest-ranking society members like chiefs, kings and village heads though they mostly owned ivory statues. Lega figures symbolically conveyed particular moral qualities or defects that are expressed through dance and sung aphorisms in initiations to the highest grades of the association. This is a fine small flat Lega statue with traces of kaolin around the facial area, bent hands sculpted on the waist area, legs facing opposite each other and a worn-out brown patina, it looks old and reflects shows signs repeated good usage.
