The Lega inhabit the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo between the great lakes and the Lualaba River. All Lega art is used within the context of the Bwami society. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden, but little by little, ivory came into use. Such sculptures were reserved for the highest-ranking society members. The genius of the Lega artist lies in his ability to produce artistically unique work. Unique work that fulfills the requirements of the Bwami patron. They usually have symbols that represented the patron’s moral qualities.
This is a wonderful wooden sculpture with a complex and refined form. It has a beautiful dark patina and shows signs of age and usage.
