The Lega inhabit the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River. All Lega art is used within the context of the Bwami society for the production of most Lega artwork. Among the Bwami, people usually ordered human figure artwork from artists. The owner would specify the material to be used, the posture and the elements to be used, then the artist would know whether to carve either a male or a female figure using wood or bone with its head raised, arms by its sides, etc. The use of the figure was not necessarily revealed to the artist. During the dedication ceremony, the piece acquired its meaning and designation – known to its owners. Once the figure was sold, its meaning became unknown as with this piece. The following statue has a khaki patina and is covered in kaolin, it shows signs of old age due to extensive usage.
