This is an old small Lega passport mask from the Lega tribe habiting in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lega masks refer to ancestors and are passed from one generation of initiates to the next as symbols of continuity.
This is an ancient horned mask, “Kayamba” mask and probably one of the rarest among the five types of Lega masks, It was kept in a collective basket associated with the highest grades of the bwami and kindi and made its appearance during initiation in the lutumbo lwa yananio grade. In a single ritual community, the responsibility for the collective basket was transmitted to the successor of a mwami who died or been promoted. Such masks were held by the instructors, experienced kindi who organized the initiation rites. It has a brown patina and traces of white kaolin in the face and shows good usage
