Lega Ivory Whistle (LMCL-009)

Lega tribe are found in the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people.  Lega whistles were sometimes blown during initiation to induce the shades to avert rain and were also employed during performances in circumcision rites and in other initiations. Some Lega used ivory whistles in the Kingili rite in which the whistle is symbolic of witches who used the instrument to replicate the call of a parrot to attract victims.
